Hopefully by now you have watched season 8 episode 2 of Game of Thrones on HBO, and won’t be like “WHAT THE HELL IS JENNY OF OLDSTONES AND WHY IS FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE COVERING IT?”
The answer of course, is from the source material- George R. R. Martin’s book series, “A Song of Ice and Fire”. In the third book, “A Storm of Swords”, Arya hears Westerosi song “Jenny of Oldstones” while out with the Brotherhood Without Banners, the group of men who follow Beric Donarrion. The song concerns Jenny, wife of Duncan Targaryen (the Prince of Dragonflies).
In the second episode of season 8 of Game of Thrones, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”, Pod (Daniel Portman) chooses this particular song to serenade the assembled warriors with on the eve of their battle. Portman sang the piece live, noting the use of herbal tea with honey, but the credits of the episode had a different version.
Will this song have meaning come the Battle of Winterfell? Are we going to get more covers of songs before the end of the season?
Only time will tell.
Game of Thrones will air for just 4 more Sundays on HBO.
