'The Boys in the Band': Ryan Murphy, Netflix Adapting Broadway Hit as Feature Film
Creative power-house Ryan Murphy (American Horror Story, Pose, Glee) continues flexing his Netflix muscle and proving why we're rightly justified to have a professional obsession with him, announcing on Instagram that he will be reuniting the entire Broadway cast of 2018's The Boys in the Band for a feature film adaptation at Netflix.
With Murphy producing alongside David Stone and Ned Martel, the movie includes Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Andrew Rannells, Matt Bomer, Charlie Carver, Robin de Jesus, Tuc Watkins, Michael Benjamin Washington, and Brian Hutchison reprising their roles under the direction of Joe Mantello.
Set to premiere some time in 2020, here's a look at what Murphy had to say about the project in his original social media post:
"Last summer, THE BOYS IN THE BAND were on Broadway, breaking house records at The Booth. THIS summer, The Boys In the Band will be filming a Netflix movie event.
The incomparable Joe Mantello, who directed the Broadway revival, will direct the film adaptation. The Broadway cast of BOYS was so important to me, and as equally groundbreaking as Mart Crowley's seminal work. Everyone in the cast was out and proud…and feeling so blessed to mark the 50th anniversary of Mart's landmark play.
The entire Broadway cast will reprise their roles in the film. I can't wait to be on set with Joe and Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Andrew Rannells, Matt Bomer, Charlie Carver, Robin de Jesus, Tuc Watkins, Michael Benjamin Washington and Brian Hutchison. I will be producing the film with David Stone and Ned Martel. Look for THE BOYS on Netflix in 2020."
The news comes slightly more than a week after Murphy announced he was moving forward on a feature film adaptation of hit Broadway musical The Prom – though it is still not clear if he will write, produce, or both.
From director-choreographer Casey Nicholaw and loosely based on a real-life incident, The Prom follows a troupe of hilariously self-obsessed theater stars who swarm a small conservative Indiana town in support of a high school girl who wants to take her girlfriend to the prom. Jack Viertel developed the concept, with a book by Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin, music by Matthew Sklar, and lyrics by Beguelin. Bill Damaschke, Dori Berinstein, and Jack Lane serve as producers.
Film adaptations of The Boys in the Band and The Prom are just two of several projects Murphy has in play at Netflix, including Ben Platt-starrer The Politician premiering September 27 and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest prequel series Ratched with Sarah Paulson, as well as Hollywood – all part of his exclusive creative deal with the streaming service.
