According to the official film franchise Twitter account (who had also announced Edie Falco's casting), Yeoh will be playing scientist Dr. Karina Mogue.

Director James Cameron offered a comment on the casting to Deadline, saying:

"Throughout her career, Michelle has always created unique and memorable characters. I look forward to working with Michelle to do the same thing on the Avatar sequels."

Yeoh of course has most recently been part of CBS All Access hit series Star Trek: Discovery, and will reportedly be heading her own spinoff series about character Philippa Georgiou.
