What Will the Actual Price of DC Comics' $4.99 Card Covers Be?

In July, DC Comics is running a promotion for their Year Of The Villain event in which a bunch of titles get special cardstock covers. And comic book readers get to pay an extra dollar for the privilege, bumping prices up to $4.99 or $5.99 for the larger Aquaman #50 and Batman #75. They can also buy them with a regular cover for a regular $3.99/$4.99.

In a world where the new fantasy PI series Fairlady from Image Comics promises 30 page done-in-one stories for its $3.99 price, while War Of The Realms #1 charges $5.99 for its first 30 page story, where Spawn, Looney Tunes, Scooby Doo, Teen Titans Go and Archie Beach Party are the last regular titles from well known publishers still holding the line at $2.99 after Terrifics stopped and the rest of the New Age Of Heroes line fell, Walking Dead and the Millarworld titles jumped and the Marvel all-ages line took the four dollar price point. Will Spawn finally switch after #300? Alterna Comics manage to get new comics out at $1.50 and $1.99 a piece but don't get anywhere near the big sales as a result. All the time while Marvel, Image and Alterna push out dollar reprint comics, Dynamite and DC have 25 cent launch prices and Free Comic Book Day is just round the corner.

The debate about price, about value, about heft is ready for another runaround. With Marvel and DC's digital streaming back catalogue getting more popular, how soon before a comics publisher commits to going full hog with new comics dropping for streaming along the Netflix model? After all, it does cost a lot more to make a TV show than a comic book… even if you were to pay John Byrne what Rob Liefeld was offering back in the day.

It feels like there's a a rubber band waiting to snap. If it does, and the direct market suffers as a result, don't ezpect those with the cheapest comics – and the lowest profit margins as a result – to be the ones to survive. Arguably Diamond Comic Distributors has the tightest margins of all and is the reason comic books can be as cheap as they are. Check out the cost of art books, and how much you might pay for twenty pages of new colour artwork in any other medium than comics.

One thing this will do in the short term statistical moment is see DC Comics get a bump on the number of titles published, as Diamond counts the same comic with multiple price points as separate issues, and also an increase in their revenue marketshare too, something Marvel usually dominate by more over.

But the future? That's all to play for… here are those cardstock covered titles from DC Comics for July 2019.
