Phantom Zone of Sydney, Australia, is Closing

Australian comic book store The Phantom Zone of Sydney has posted the following message to its customers,

After 30 years in the biz and a short stint online, we have decided to close the store for good. We are saddened by the decision but thankful for all of your support and patronage over the years. Some of you have become life-long friends and we look back on our time with you all fondly.

What this means for you? Unfortunately we will not be able to fulfil any future orders. This weeks comics will be our last delivery. We will be processing all remaining items aside for you all by the end of the week. If your card doesn't go through, or your invoice is unpaid as of end of business Friday 29th March, we will have to sell your comics on.

We are in contact with our fellow stores in NSW and have given them a heads up that some of you will likely switch your orders to them. We will continue you aide you in this transition and we hope you support our fellow stores, showing them the same love and loyalty to have afforded us. Phantom Phans we have spoken to Glenn and the Frew team and they will keep your subscriptions running if you so wish.

With the recent closure of Comic Kingdom after more than 40 years, that leaves only Kings Comics as the last of the classic stores, and even they have had to shift premises because of rising rental prices and development in the city…

Chris J Thompson Really sad to hear this … I used to have my standing order at Phantom Zone when you first opened on Argyll Street, and I kept it until I moved away. I'd heard this was possibly on the cards, but it's so sad to see more and more comic stores closing – especially as someone who has been in retail and now works on the publishing side. Thanks for all the years of great service, and I hope you all go on to amazing things. With the loss of Phantom Zone and Comic Kingdom in recent times, it feels as though Sydney is really struggling comics-wise.

Leah Rose Y's – I'm am genuinely getting a little teary as I write this to you all. You have been the best 'comic guy' a girl could ever ask for and I have loved all of our interactions since that fateful day I wandered into your store all those years ago. Andrew Stevens Been shopping with you guys since the beginning of image comics. I was just a little boy, but I remember your original location before the move. You were where the train and bus station is now. My older brothers got me into comics. When they grew out of it I kept going. And was a customers up until you closed the physical shop. All the best. All good things have to come to an end. Cheers and good luck.

Any memories to share?

Bleeding Cool tries to mark the passing of comic stores as well as new arrivals on the scene. We're more likely to hear about the former rather than the latter due to concerned fans, but do please feel free to let us know the changes in your own local marketplace.
