Victoria Alonso Says "The World is Ready" for a Gay Superhero in the MCU

There have been some interesting rumors about the next stage of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in recent weeks. There aren't any definitive sources saying anything yet but right now there are some huge rumors going around that Marvel Studios is looking to cast an openly gay actor for a role in The Eternals. That would be a big deal in the push for diversity and inclusivity for the Marvel Universe. Of course, no one is saying anything definitive yet but it sounds like they are at least open to the idea. Variety got the chance to interview Marvel production chief Victoria Alonso and was asked about the commitment to diversity and inclusion.

"Why wouldn't we be? Why wouldn't we be?" Alonso said. "I'm so passionate about this I've got to tell you. Our entire success is based on people that are incredibly different. Why wouldn't we? Why would we only want to be recognized by only one type of person? Our audience is global, is diverse, is inclusive. If we don't do it that way for them, we will fail. If we don't put pedal to the metal on the diversity and the inclusivity, we will not have continued success. Our determination is to have that for all of the people out there watching our movies."

Victoria Alonso Says "The World is Ready" for a Gay Superhero in the MCU

When asked if she thought the world is ready for a gay superhero Alonso immediately replied, "The world is ready, the world is ready." Whether or not it comes to be is a different story. Marvel has talked about diversity over the year but it still took them ten years to get a female solo superhero movie out with a female director. The talk is important but it's only talk. If Alonso is really as committed as she says she is then they need to make the casting happen instead of just talking about it.

Summary: Carol Danvers becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.

Captain Marvel, directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, will also star Brie Larson, Jude Law, Gemma Chan, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Samuel L. Jackson. The film is set for release on March 8th, 2019.
