The Gifted Season 2: New Promo and the Cast/Crew Talks the Finale

The Gifted has turned into an interesting little corner of the X-Men universe. In some ways, it's become more accurate to the comics than the movies have ever been. For example; someone finally had the courage to give one of Magneto's daughter the tiara from the comics. However, the ratings for the second season haven't been great and since it's on the notoriously trigger happy Fox, there is a decent chance that it's about to get canceled. That means the season finale set to air tomorrow is likely the series finale unless someone saves the show. Fox has shared a new promo for the episode which actually gives us a better idea of what's going to happen.

This might be the last episode but it very much sounds like they are planning on going out with a bang. One of the reasons people haven't been crazy about this season is because it's been a bit on the slow side but that looks like it's about to change. According to showrunner Maxx Nix to TV Line we should expect a big finale.

"It's a big season finale," showrunner Matt Nix shares with TVLine. "This is the first episode where [production] was like, 'We have to do a meeting where everyone comes and sits there for a full hour approving effects, all meeting long,' because there was just so much. After first laying eyes on Nix's script, "Production was basically like, 'This is impossible. I don't know what you were thinking, you shouldn't have written this," he recalls with a chuckle. "I was like, 'Everybody breathe. We will figure out a way.'"

Emma Dumont went on to say that Nix wrote what is essentially a two-hour movie and they had to cut it down to 45 minutes. That is some serious editing.

"It's crazy, it was so big. And very heartbreaking," says Emma Dumont, who plays Lorna. "Matt wrote, like, a two-hour episode, and we only had 44 [minutes] and change, so we'll see how that goes! But yeah, a lot happens."

Nix and Amy Acker also went on to say that there are going to be tears, so it sounds like someone else is going to bite the dust. Thus far the previews aren't telling us much but there is going to be blood on the ground.

"There's a lot of tragedy… and a lot of hope," says Nix. "And some big stuff happens that made people cry on the set." Caitlin's portrayer, Amy Acker, concurs, warning, "There's gonna be some tears. Maybe a lot."

Skyler Samuels talked about making sure no one gives anything away but that fans should expect some big moments in this final episode. We'll have to see how things end up with the Stepford Cuckoos.

"It's a real mine field to not give away all our secrets…," smiles Skyler Samuels "But there are some big, 'Holy s–t!' moments — hence the tears. … Blair [Redford] has been using the word 'tragic,' and I feel like I would also use that word. It gets a little heavy, and then it definitely takes a turn for the interesting."

Since this might be a series finale, there is the worry that there is going to be a cliffhanger. Dumont went on the record to say that there is a cliffhanger but that "it's not what people think. This cliffhanger is not that simple." What does that mean? Well, Dumont isn't saying but she threw out a bunch of possibilities.

"Maybe a new dimension? Maybe a new world? Maybe a new faction? Maybe a new comic book character?" Whatever the case winds up being, "Literally, it's the craziest twist," she avows. "We were all shocked, like, 'What is this?'"

Nix has said that the third season could be a lot like Days of Future Past and with all of the hints that Clarice is still alive but maybe somewhere else, it looks like The Gifted might be embracing science fiction to an even bigger degree. Whether or not we'll get to see any of it remains to be seen. Maybe Hulu will pick up the show or Fox will give us a surprise renewal. We'll just have to hope that despite the cliffhanger there is some sort of resolution for fans tomorrow.

Action-adventure family drama THE GIFTED, from Marvel, tells the story of a suburban couple whose ordinary lives are rocked by the sudden discovery that their children possess mutant powers. Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family joins up with an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive.

Created by Matt Nix, FOX's The Gifted stars Stephen Moyer, Amy Acker, Natalie Alyn Lind, Percey Hynes White, Sean Teale, Emma Dumont, Jamie Chung, and Blair Redford. It returns on February 26th at 9 PM.
