How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World Director on How the Series Could Continue

The How To Train Your Dragon series has been capturing the imaginations of kids and adults alike for ten years. It isn't uncommon for studios to keep a series aimed at younger audiences unfinished so can milk the property for all that it's worth. This is even truer when you're talking about series that are animated and the characters only age as much as the creators want them to.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World Director on How the Series Could Continue

That isn't the case over at Dreamworks who decided to give the How To Train Your Dragon series a nice, definitive ending with How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. Despite that ending, director Dean DeBlois told CinemaBlend that if Dreamworks wanted to bring it back they could figure out a way to do it.

I think if DreamWorks decided to open it up at some point, I hope it would be a different timeline, different characters with the Hiccup/Toothless story remained intact.

The connections that audiences made with not only the human characters but the dragons are the reasons people kept coming back to this series. The idea that they could just start over in a different corner of the world with different humans and dragons is probably the most likely way to do it, but it does feel like it might cheapen all of the previous movies and TV shows. That friendship between Hiccup and Toothless was the first of its kind and that is what made it so special. It was enough that it changed the people and animals around them. Can you really have that without them?

We won't know until or unless Dreamworks attempts to revive this franchise. Until then we have three excellent movies and some great TV shows that take place in this excellent universe.

Summary: As Hiccup fulfills his dream of creating a peaceful dragon utopia, Toothless' discovery of an untamed, elusive mate draws the Night Fury away. When danger mounts at home and Hiccup's reign as village chief is tested, both dragon and rider must make impossible decisions to save their kind.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, directed by Dean DeBlois, stars Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera, Cate Blanchett, Gerard Butler, Kristen Wiig, and Jonah Hill. It will be released on February 22nd.
