The Fast and Furious franchise has been paying the bills of Universal Pictures since 2001. The series went from what looked like a one-off car movie to a mega-franchise spanning eight movies and gets its first spin-off this year. The movies have even started getting some critical praise in recent years so it’s not surprising that we’ll be getting a ninth one sooner rather than later. The cast of these movies has been pretty stable over the years, but it sounds like one cast member isn’t sure if she’s returning.
Back in June of 2017, Michelle Rodriguez said that she might quit the series if they didn’t start “showing some love” to the female characters. She clarified those statements but she isn’t a sure thing for Fast & Furious 9. She recently told Vanity Fair that she wasn’t sure if she was coming back because she hadn’t read a script yet.
“I don’t know if I’m coming back. I have to read the script first. Once I read the script, I’ll know,” the action vet said on the red carpet. “When I read the script—and I hope that it’s inclusive—then I’ll agree to come back or not. My energy is completely directed toward the feminine right now and supporting women. I’ve spent most of my life shooting guns, and hanging out with the boys, and watching them scratch their balls, and smelling protein-mixed farts. And now I’m feeling the poetry and the beauty and the sensuality of women, and the power we bring together. So they need to show more love to the women. I don’t know which direction it’s going to go. But I know that I’m headed in that direction. We’ll see if that all matches.”
There is still plenty of time for Rodriguez to make a call one way or another. Fast & Furious 9 has a release date of April 10th, 2020 so they have until at least the middle of this year to figure out a script and a cast. Pre-production for this movie will likely start toward the middle of 2019.
The next entry in this franchise, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, the first spin-off of this franchise is due out August 2, 2019.
