Apple Reported Working on a Game Subscription Service

Looks like Apple wants to jump into the game subscription service wheelhouse, too, according to the latest reports. Cheddar broke the news this morning with a report that the company has been talking to several game developers about starting their own service, much int he same vein of how Game Fly operated, but with more of a Netflix model behind it. The project appears to be one of a half dozen projects the company is working on that will work not just to provide mobile games, but also be a service on systems like your PC and consoles where you pay a monthly fee to have access to a specific bundle of games every month.

Apple Reported Working on a Game Subscription Service

While the idea isn't new, the fact that Apple wants to get into a market that currently has a few other companies planning the same thing is both interesting and telling of where Apple is when it comes to wanting to make more money off of gamers. The real test of whether or not it will work for Apple is who they can get on board and how much they plan to charge. If it's a bunch of indie titles and you're only paying $5, that seems reasonable. But if they actually get AAA titles in the mix, we could see Apple charging an arm and a leg to use the service, which may drive people away. We'll see what happens as the company hasn't even officially announced a launch for it yet. But if they're going to do it, E3 would be the place.
