Bleeding Cool Bestseller List, 27th January 2019 – Batman Beats Guardians… Just

This is the Top Ten Bleeding Cool Bestseller List, as compiled by a number of comic stores from their sales on Wednesday and Thursday. It measures what are known as the "Wednesday Warriors", those who can't wait till the weekend to get this week's comics. We salute you, and the keenness you bring to your passion.

Batman naturally takes the top but Guardians Of The Galaxy came close, with Justice League close behind. And for a number of stores they both beat Batman… Naomi makes a strong debut for an unknown character called, well, Naomi. And Lucifer makes a surprise entry…

Batman came out on top yet again this week, managing to outsell Marvel's latest new #1, but Guardians of the Galaxy still enjoyed relative success. It's not terribly surprising, given the creative team and how well Cates' Cosmic Ghost Rider performed– I only hope Cates can get by without his typical hillbilly-humor, especially after the lukewarm reception towards his Marvel Knights. Buffy the Vampire Slayer did better than expected, no doubt due to the eye-catching covers and lasting Whedonverse fandom, and DC's Naomi #1 brought something fresh to the table amidst the more recent DC #1s. The Uncanny X-Men Annual attracted more attention than UXM usually does, and I have to assume it has something to do with Cyclops front-and-center on the cover, kindling hopes that the X-Men will be brought out of the gimmicky limbo they've been existing in.

This week had a pretty nice spread of books. While the top of our list is pretty business as usual, with BATMAN and JUSTICE LEAGUE dominating, we've also got the new Donny Cates + Geoff Shaw GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY moving quite well this week.

Mid-list brings us the always-excellent IMMORTAL HULK, along with the new SHAZAM and an X-Annual.

Bringing up the rear we've got Bendis, Walker, and Campbell's newest addition to the Wonder Comics line: NAOMI. Not bad for a first issue of a brand-new character, though that stacked creative team probably helps!

A strong week for new series! Guardians Of The Galaxy, Buffy and Naomi #1 all made the top 6! Lucifer #4, of the always wonderful Sandman universe, came in second with Monstress #19 close behind. Although it was a relatively small new comics Wednesday, it was a good week for good comics! Pearl, Shuri, Immortal Hulk, Naomi, Buffy, Monstress and Lucifer are all great new series so it's good to see them selling well!

Cold weather has made for cold sales (hopefully that is all it is). Weak, very weak sales week.

Six Marvels and four DCs in this week's top ten. Batman failed to take number one in our shop this week, edged out by Guardians of the Galaxy. DC attrition is taking its toll; I haven't heard this level of reader discontent towards DC since late in the pre-Convergence New 52 era, Two years ago, almost all of our store's top ten was DC, showing what a difference two years (and the CCO departure of Geoff Johns, who knew what fans wanted to read) can do to a once-beloved line.

Batman takes the top spot (yet again) with Batman Who Laughs on our FFF weekly Top Ten Bestseller list. Snyder, Jock and Batman are almost guaranteed sellers on their own. Put all three together and throw in one of last year's biggest characters and you have an absolute sales smash. Amazing Spider-Man has been a consistent seller and was our #2 book this week. Donny Cates took two spots with Babyteeth at #4 and Venom at #6. The surprise of the week was Conan which was our 8th best seller. This is a book that very little buzz from our customers but is selling as well as Catwoman and Wolverine. We'll see if the buzz lasts when there are two more series with the character on the shelf.
