Getting Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson Back Together for Men in Black: International

For all the reasons to be excited for Men in Black: International, one of those reasons is the cast. Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson were two of the reasons that Thor: Ragnarok worked as well as it did. They play well off of each other and their natural chemistry combined with their stellar comedic timing really made that movie special. Total Film got the chance to speak to Hemsworth and Thompson about getting the chance to work together again.

“We just had such a great time on that film,” Hemsworth says. “So when Tessa’s name was in the mix, [for Men in Black International] it was like, ‘Aw, yeah – we can pick up where we left off. This will be easy.'”

Thompson also said that as soon as they got together again on the set they were both ready to rock it.

“Chris was like, ‘Hey, legend, are we going to rock this?’” says Thompson. “And I was like, ‘Yeah, we’re gonna!’”

Of course, there were people who made some sexist remarks to Thompson about the fact that the movie is called “Men in Black” and she is a woman. Thompson, however, doesn’t see it that way at all.

“When I was cast, [people] were like, ‘MEN In Black? How do you reconcile that?’ The truth is, there’s always been really great women in these movies. It’s a continuation,” says Thompson.

The challenge for this movie is taking something we’ve seen three times already and making it new and different enough to breathe a second life into this franchise.

“There are challenges inherent in making it really fresh, new and original,” she admits. “We have such a great foundation there… we just have to not screw it up,” adds Hemsworth.

As far as summer movies are concerned, Men in Black: International is far from a sure thing. If recent years have taught us anything, it’s that having an established brand doesn’t guarantee box office success. We’ll have to see how this one ends up doing.

Summary: The Men in Black have always protected the Earth from the scum of the universe. In this new adventure, they tackle their biggest threat to date: a mole in the Men in Black organization.

Men in Black: International, directed by F. Gary Gray, stars Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Rebecca Ferguson, Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson, and Kumail Nanjiani. It will be released on June 14, 2019.
