ComiXology Bestseller List, 11th January 2019 – DC Comics Takes the Top Four

Welcome to the ComiXology Bestseller list, your guide to see how well your favorite titles are selling digitally. Every week, I'll post the ranking of every new title, plus a ranking of the best selling volumes and graphic novels. As always, I hope you find it interesting and informative.

DC's rebuilding plan is slowly bearing fruit. Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps was phased out for a less recurring but better selling The Green Lantern. (How many of you read the latest issue by the way? Whatever Grant Morrison is on, I want some of that). And now the big Bendis signing has paid off again, with the return of the much beloved Young Justice. Now, not everything Bendis has done for DC has been sales gold: Jinxworld is selling Young Animal Numbers. But this new Wonder Comics line is off to a banging start, and is exactly what DC will need if they hope to fill the void of the New Age of Heroes flop.

Young Justice and The Green Lantern help DC take the top four spots, and with Heroes in Crisis selling strongly in its second week, DC is able to force a tie with Marvel in the Top 10, 5-5. DC is slowly gaining back the ground it gave to Marvel, one month at a time.

So here's something that doesn't happen often: a book debuts outside the Top 10, but in its second issue jumps into the Top 10. That book is Miles Morales: Spider-Man, whose impressive second-week performance made me question my skepticism over movie synergy. Peter better watch out, otherwise Miles will surpass and replace him, igniting Comicsgate 2.0. (I kid, I kid).

In other Spider-Man news, Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man had a solid debut at No. 14. Not great if you're judging it against the main Spidey series, but impressive when compared to Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man, which usually sold in the 20's.

Captain Marvel has had a rough ride these last few years. After poor reception of the character during Civil War II, Carol Danvers has been on the lower tier of Marvel's digital sales. But even with a terrifying cover (it's like she's staring into someone's soul off-page), the new Fresh Start Captain Marvel makes its debut at No. 12 (and No. 11 in New Issues). That's a double-digit improvement, so if this holds, this new Captain Marvel will be one of Marvel's biggest Fresh Start successes. Now, this begs the question: is the renewed interest due to the upcoming movie, or is Kelly Thompson quickly becoming a household name among comic fans?

Either way, Kelly Thompson is building quite the resume. West Coast Avengers cracked the Top 10 in its debut, Jessica Jones was by far the best Marvel Digital Original, and Mr. X & Mrs. X remains a very consistent seller in the teens. That exclusive deal she signed with Marvel last year looks smarter every day.
