Miles Morales to Revisit Infamous Spider-Man Story in Champions #1 (SPOILERS)

Champions #1 out this Wednesday is getting a new series and a new cast. A much bigger cast. In the previous series, laggers and hangers-on to the Champions team were increasing and here they make it official. I am reminded of this final scene from the classic Giant-Size X-Men from Len Wein and Dave Cockrum in 1978…

…what are they going to do with thirteen X-Men. Turns out most of them leave right away.

With The Champions, it's not that simple. What are you going to do with Thirteen Champions?

There's the core team of Miles Morales, Kamala Khan, Viv Vision and Amadeus Cho

Then there's the group of Ironheart, Power Man, Patriot and Wasp.

And another group with  Snowguard, the Locust, Falcon, Bombshell and Pinpoint.

You could also count the powerless Sam Humphries and Sparky the Vision Dog if you wanted to make it up to fifteen. But that's not all, the team has back-ups too.

Cloud 9, Honey Badger, Moon Girl, Prodigy, Red Dagger, Silk and someone else beginning with S – that's a total twenty-two Champions. Where's George Perez when you need him? But no, Steven Cummings, Marcio Menyz and Erick Arciniega do a fine job making this vast cast distinct and different in looks and dynamic approach a they fill their respective panels.

Because as much as this is a comic about managing all these characters, that's also the job that writer Jim Zub places on Ms Marvel's shoulders, running the teams, stacking up the missions, juggling the members – even as something is going very wrong at its core. Uneasy lies the head that wears the cowl.

Because something is up with Miles Morales, and not just that he still hasn't got to see the movie starring him, with all this Champions business.

In fact, while the new Champions are all seeming fit and fine, hearty and healthy, working together and proving reliable in the field, something is very wrong with those at the centre. And it may involve someone who has a history of causing problems with Spider-Man. Just not this Spider-Man. But they appear to have this new one in their sights. Maybe they saw Into The Spider-Verse and fancy being in the sequel?

Click here for a major spoiler if you can recognise the font… just keep it to yourself for now. But it may be a bad time to be anyone close to Miles Morales = or the rest of the Champions – right now.
