Bleeding Cool's Best of Horror Everything For 2018

Horror had a great 2018 this year, and the best part is that there was something for everyone. From artistic fare to the return of the slasher, the horror films and television of 2018 saw were quality and have received the accolades they richly deserve. Let's take a look at not just films and television, but all of the horror things that brought us joy in our Monster Kids hearts this year.

Scream Factory

Scream Factory continues to outdo themselves with their awesome Blu-ray releases. This year some of our favorite releases from them included Drag Me to Hell, The Strangers, Silent Night, Deadly Night 2, their Critters box set, their John Carpenter Steelbooks, an excellent release of Trick r Treat, and so many more. We can't wait to see what surprises they have in store for us in 2019.

Mandy Blu Ray

Mandy

One of the craziest films you will watch from the last couple years, Nicholas Cage is at his deranged best in this insane and gory film from director Panos Cosmatos. After cult shatters the life of two people living in the Pacific Northwest, Cage's Red Miller goes on a Rambo-on-acid style revenge trip against them. The first half is trippy, the second half is just insane. The whole thing is fun.

Fangoria 2018 Issue 1 Cover

The Return of Fangoria

A staple of every horror fan's childhood, Fangoria was welcomed back with open arms when the first issue of volume 2 was released in October. Now a quarterly, opening that baggie the first issue came in and those stills down the side and the logo across the top put a smile on every horror fans face this year. The amount of content was staggering, it took us a full week to make our way through it. We had to consume every word, not only because the topics were interesting, but because we were just so happy to be holding a new issue again. Can't wait for issue 2.

Shock Waves and Test Pattern Podcasts

We were late to the party on Shock Waves, but once we were turned onto it we quickly caught up. Hosted by Rob Galluzzo, Elric Kane, Ryan Turek, and Rebekah McKendry, this show will not only make you feel like part of the conversation, but will educate you on what horror you may be missing in film, tv, books, music, you name it. They always do a phenomenal job with their creator interviews as well. We have lost track of how many new projects we discovered because of them this year. For more in depth looks at some of the same subjects, it is hard to beat Test Pattern. Hosts Jacob and Tab go way, way in depth about whatever the subject of the show is (a recent favorite is their Play Misty For Me/Misery episode), but nothing is better than their mailbag episodes. In those not just horror is covered, but a variety of subjects with depth and attention that you need to hear to fully appreciate. Also: they have the best intro to a podcast you will ever hear.

Hell Fest Poster

Hell Fest

A great throwback to the slasher films of the 80's, the setting of a theme park horror festival ala Halloween Horror Nights at Universal every year is used in great ways here. It looks gorgeous, and doesn't fall into some of the traps most slasher films do. The ending was pretty neat as well. This didn't blow anyone's socks off at the box office, but we think it will find its audience on streaming services and find its fans moving forward.

Shudder

Speaking of streaming services, if you are a fan of horror and not subscribing to this one at this point what is wrong with you? From classics to originals to some little known films and shows for you to discover, this is the year that Shudder started to take over horror fans viewing time. Right now, you can stream Mandy, the holiday classic Black Christmas, Misery, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. That's a great day of viewing right there. Time to sign up horror fans.

Halloween 2018

Halloween

Welcome back Michael. Boy have we missed you. While not a complete home run, this year's Halloween reboot/reimagining/whatever you want to call it was successful at bringing back one of horror icons in a big way. It became an event, and that is something that has been missing from horror if you ask us. These icons are so for a reason, and when they come back to us they should be treated with the respect and grandeur that Michael was shown this year. If nothing else, the ride getting there was fantastic.

Hereditary

Hereditary

This is a film that proves that Hollywood is afraid of horror. This film should be up for so many awards this season, and while that is not everything, it would be nice to see a horror masterwork like this recognized the way it deserves. The entire cast knocks it out of the park, especially Toni Collette. Heart-breaking and terrifying, this is the best film about grief we have ever seen.

NECA Horror Collage

NECA Horror Figures

NECA outdid themselves this year, as they provided horror fans with some of the best figures of our favorites that we have ever gotten. Their Pennywise, both classic and modern, were highly anticipated and they delivered in spades. We have a line now that features every horror icon you can think of, all high quality and the stuff of dreams. We even got a Captain Blake figure from The Fog with light-up eyes. Here's hoping that in 2019 we can finish off the Jason Voorhees figures and we get even more surprises.

Haunting of Hill House Poster

The Haunting of Hill House

While the rest of this list is not in any kind of order, we can say for sure that this was our favorite horror anything of 2018. Really, there is not much else to say about it than what we already did in our review. This is as good as it gets not just for horror, but for television itself. Go watch it and enjoy it if you already haven't.
