Fallout 76 Now Under Fire for Lazy Ultrawide Mode Update

Fallout 76 just can’t catch a break, can it? Bethesda rolled out a new patch for the multiplayer game this week which brought a number of changes, including ultrawide screen resolution support for PC gamers. However, players on the Fallout 76 reddit noticed that the ultrawide mode appears to be nothing more than a modification of the 16:9 aspect ratio. Which basically means some of the visuals have been stretched to fit a 21:9 display rather than being a true widescreen mode. Sure, the graphics will render correctly, but the fix doesn’t roll with the game’s UI. Making the HUD both unwieldy and wonky as hell.

You can check out some screenshots of the ultrawide debacle courtesy of Redditor AbheekG here, which are included the following commentary, “please observe how the text is so evidently stretched, how the sliders are so large and how the menu options and workbench menus are so oddly enlarged!”

AbheekG’s post also included comparisons for the unofficial ultrawide mods to Fallout 4 and Fallout 76, with the note that “a modder without access to the source code did what Bethesda didn’t in a whole month!”

Several other players hit the comments on AbheekG’s thread to note that they also had the same trouble with the official ultrawide fix.

While the fix isn’t great, you might be wondering why PC players are so mad about it. The problem is that, if the ultrawide fix really is just an INI edit, well, that fix has been around since day one. Sure, it wasn’t pretty, but it was workable and players were alright with it, waiting for an official fix to the problem. To get an official response that is basically the same old solution with no improvements… They’re taking it as an insult and we can’t disagree.

While some players are still hoping for Bethesda to build a relationship with their player base and properly fix Fallout 76, many of the remaining players are angrier than ever.

Bethesda has stated that they may release one more patch before the end of the year, before focusing on improvements to the game for 2019, but it may be too little, too late.
