It’s all go today in comic books. No sooner is Greg Goldstein out at IDW, and Chris Ryall back in, and all the questions and answers that will bring, then Bleeding Cool hears news of another major comic book industry change that has me ripping up my drafts for the Top 100 Power List for the second time this evening.
Bleeding Cool has had it confirmed from multiple sources that Joe Illidge is no longer Executive Editor of Valiant Entertainment.
The comic book company behind the likes of Bloodshot, X-O Manowar and Quantum & Woody went through some employment ructions after the publisher was bought by Chinese investment firm and previous majority shareholder DMG. But on the 9th of April, Valiant hired Joe Illidge away from his role as showrunner of Lion Forge’s Catalyst Prime for their Executive Editor role, replacing departing EIC Warren Simmons.
I told from Valiant sources that there was a parting of ways between Joe Illidge and Valiant in recent days, and as it stands there is no one lined up to replace him at the publisher.
Illidge was previously best known for being an editor at Milestone Media, then on the Batman titles, as a comics industry journalist and speaker, before kicking off the Catalyst Prime shared superhero line at Lion Forge. I look forward to hearing just what happened at Valiant, and also what Illidge’s plans going forward are at a later date… but now is not that time.
I am writing this on the bus home after seeing Aquaman. Will I make it before another industry-chattering change occurs?
UPDATE: Joe Illidge replies with this e-mail;
“I’ve had a lot of dynamic and provocative conversations the last few days – and am excited to be connecting with people who are truly ready to explore the deep and inherently powerful connections between character and culture in contemporary comics and other media. Stay tuned!!”
