Bleeding Cool Bestseller List, 11th November 2018 – 'The Green Lantern by The Grant Morrison'

This is the Top Ten Bleeding Cool Bestseller List, as compiled by a number of comic stores from their sales on Wednesday and Thursday. It measures what are known as the "Wednesday Warriors", those who can't wait till the weekend to get this week's comics. We salute you, and the keenness you bring to your passion.

The Green Lantern's launch knocks aside Batman, but Marvel have a better launch for the new Marvel Knights 20 series than they may have anticipated? The Cates effect kicks in, even if the Death of the Inhumans finale doesn't get a mention.

Who had this to say

Batman is on top at FFF this week taking the top spot of our weekly Top Ten. The Green Lantern from The Grant Morrison managed to sell one less copy making it the highest selling GL book we've had since Geoff Johns was on the book. After reading the first issue, I don't see those numbers sticking though. Even our Resident Grant Morrison Fan was a little lukewarm on it. Walking Dead was #4 which is higher than it's been lately. Deathstroke's B cover managed to help it outsell Spider-Geddon and take the #5 spot by one copy. The strangest thing about this week was Stranger Things #2 which came out two weeks ago. The book's first week was lackluster especially considering the fact that #1 was such a hit. But we managed to sell more #2's this week than last week thanks to a Facebook post showing off the issue's covers and just casual fans who don't really adhere to the month to month schedule. Immortal Hulk continues to be the most popular Hulk book in probably a decade.

Color me shocked that Batman wasn't the number one spot this week like it has been for every week it has come out this year just about. We did run a promotion, however, on Green Lantern #1 that incentivized that book to the top spot. Honestly, Batman, Green Lantern, and Walking Dead were all really close to each other in sales. The Umbrella Academy doesn't normally hit the top ten but we are at NC Comiccon this weekend and selling a good amount of copies at the show since Gerard Way is the guest of honor. Everything else played out about the same as usual, including nearly selling out once again of what has to be one of the dumbest named titles of all time, Spider-Geddon. But are you geddon it?

Grant Morrison's new Green Lantern #1 was, of course, our bestseller, but The Wicked + The Divine: The Funnies one-shot wasn't too far behind. An already super popular series that's now promising to make you laugh? I think a lot of folks probably had a hard time saying no to that this week.

What's that!? A GREEN LANTERN book is our number one seller for the week?? How is that even possi… Oh! It's a GREEN LANTERN book by Grant Morrison and Liam Sharp? Well then *of course* it's our best seller!

My point is that it is a very good comic.

Anyways! The rest of our list is pretty by the books, with strong sales from titles like BATMAN, JUSTICE LEAGUE, and IMMORTAL HULK. Marvel event books INFINITY WARS and SPIDER-GEDDON both showed up for the week, and even the final issue of DEATH OF THE INHUMANS appears on the latter half of the list. While not the sales juggernaut of yore, THE WALKING DEAD shambles into the list near the bottom, providing some rare representation outside of the Big Two.

Four DCs, four Marvels, two Image–but nothing generating an incredible level of buzz. While Grant Morrison's Green Lantern #1 was our number one seller this week, it generated lower sales and less excitement than we had hoped, with a number of former DC fanatics passing entirely because they weren't sure it would be any better than the lackluster Green Lantern books of the past year or so. This is the most insidious aspect of diminished expectations: when something really good comes along, some are too cautious to give it a try because they've been let down before. Publishers desperately need strategically planned "tentpole books" to build line excitement every week of the year (including fifth Wednesdays).
