Gunnbronies, the hardcore devotees of controversial director James Gunn, have launched a challenge to rival obsessed fandoms such as the Snyderbronies, the hardcore fans of Zack Snyder’s DCEU, by fundraising a billboard outside Disneyland demanding the entertainment giant rehire Gunn to direct the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie.
Gunn, who was an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump on Twitter, tweeting over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again about the President and his supporters (though his opposition didn’t stop Gunn from working for Trump pal Ike Perlmutter at Marvel, nor later joining a franchise launched by Trump cabinet member Steven Mnuchin), ran afoul of alt-right agitators, who surfaced tweets of Gunn from his edgelord days of a decade earlier making jokes about topics such as pedophilia and the Holocaust. Disney swiftly cut ties with Gunn, citing the company’s supposed “values,” even though the company employed Gunn fully aware of his past comments (as they did Roseanne Barr, for that matter), and it wasn’t until after people started complaining to Disney online that their “values” suddenly became incompatible.
Gunnbronies moved quickly to launch a petition demanding that Disney rehire Gunn, and chief Gunnbrony Dave Bautista scolded Disney for empowering “fascist #Cybernazis,” calling continuing to collect a paycheck from them to star in the Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers franchises “nauseating.” The petition mirrored the actions of Snyderbronies, who started a similar petition demanding Warner Bros release the Snyder Cut of Justice League, a version of the film restoring Zack Snyder’s Vision from the theatrical version, in which alleged fake feminist Joss Whedon, who was hired by Warner Bros to complete the film after Snyder left, replaced all of Snyder’s badass Superman scenes with scenes where Cyborg says “booyah.”
But where Gunnbronies started as followers, they’ve become leaders with this newest development, which saw nearly $5,000 raised (of a $12,000 goal) to purchase the billboard, which is admittedly less than the more than $400 million than Lukebronies, the dedicated Star Wars fans and Russian bots who hated The Last Jedi so much they decided to crowdfund their own remake of the film to restore Luke Skywalker’s heroism, claim to have received pledges for. On the GoFundMe fundraising page, Gunnbrony community leader Gio Mustang wrote:
Hello from the Guardians Family to our fellow Ravagers, and all those who support the cause.
Thanks to your support — and the very “fun” business of signing contracts, false starts, negotiating, scouting, etc. — A location has been secured, the art has been approved, and our billboard in support of James Gunn has arrived!
Located just a few miles away from Disneyland, we’re aiming for this to be shared on Social Media, and maybe get some press coverage, but we’d also love to see this billboard create a destination for Gunn supporters to visit and maybe grab a photo in front of to post their support. It’s visible off the 22 Eastbound Freeway just before the Harbor Blvd. exit, and is located at the corner of Task & Newhope in Garden Grove, California. If you map it you can get there using the address 13541 Newhope Street, Garden Grove, CA 92843
It’s an exciting time to be a James Gunn fan. With his great new gig at the Distinguished Competition, and the launch of the billboard to show public support for him returning to finish his beloved franchise. Who knows if we can make Disney see the error of its ways and correct this mistake but, like you, we couldn’t stand by and do nothing. At least their competitors seem to know what Disney has lost in letting him go.
In the end this was started by a bunch of passionate fans on a lark, and we have been moved and inspired by the support out there for Gunn. Here’s hoping that this very public display of support moves the needle a bit.
Thank you for backing our play. We are so happy to finally reveal this billboard, and we hope to see some of you out there getting pictures of it in the wild.
There’s just one problem, however…James Gunn was recently hired by Warner Bros to write and probably direct the sequel to Suicide Squad in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s rival, Worlds of DC. Presumably, when Disney executives catch sight of the billboard, they’ll be inspired to launch a bidding war with Warner Bros to win back Gunn’s heart. Meanwhile, the actions of these brave Gunnbronies will hopefully inspire other fandoms to step up their game.
