Star Trek Discovery Event Becomes Call to Political Action

A Star Trek Discovery standing-room-only event at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater looked more like a get out the vote election rally than a typical fan event on Saturday.

Wilson Cruz (Dr. Hugh Culber) was asked about the fate of his character who had apparently come to his end in season one, although his presence on the panel implicitly indicated Culber still has a role to play.

“We find him where we left him – that’s your clue. Honestly I can’t say anything more than that.”

Cruz, not content to leave his moment with the mic at that, continued.

“This show, this franchise is a beacon for so many people in the world. It’s held up as this utopian idea of how we appreciate each other for our differences,” adding that it was also about the work it takes to make change happen.

“This November we have an election. and we can work together… we can reject the politics of division and of hate and create a world where we really respect each other.”

To thunderous applause, Cruz got more explicit. Lamenting a move towards political “strong men” – an obvious reference to the President – Cruz issued a call to action.

“I tell you that there are no strong men that are going to save us, we have to save each other… the first and simplest way to do that is to make sure youre registered to vote,” adding “let’s create the world we deserve” and bringing many in the theater to their feet.

Sonequa Martin-Green (Michael Burnham) immediately echoed her castmate’s sentiment, calling Star Trek a “call to arms… a push to rise.”

“The call to arms is about love” Martin-Green added.
