Assassin’s Creed Odyssey director Scott Phillips has said that he thinks it would be a mistake to go back to only offering one playable gender in the franchise going forward.

A few years ago, Assassin’s Creed got into a bit of trouble regarding female assassins. Assassin’s Creed Unity failed to offer playable women despite having a multiplayer element, with Ubisoft famously saying putting women in the game would be too hard. Since then, things have been better. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate had two leads, Jacob and Evie that took turns in the story, and this year Assassin’s Creed Odyssey will allow players to choose the gender of the character in the main game.

If the director of the game gets his way, it looks like Ubisoft might allow that choice in all future entries into the franchise too. Speaking to Gameindustry.biz, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey director Scott Phillips said that he expects the franchise to offer the choice in future outings, saying it would be a step backwards not to. He said:

I think it would be a mistake to limit our players, limit our fanbase from as many people as possible. I don’t know why we would go back. We should continue pushing in this direction, bring in more players, more fans to enjoy this experience and make it their own experience.

This is cool to hear. Giving players that choice is always going to be better than if it wasn’t there. This seems like a great direction for the Assassin’s Creed franchise to move towards as a whole. Here’s hoping this stays.
