When the ‘there should be no politics in superhero comics’ argument was raging wild last year, the example of the first Captain America story from 1939 was often given, the cover of him punching Hitler, to prove the point. Some people said that didn’t count, as it was wartime propaganda and not very controversial. It was pointed out that at the time, it was a very controversial issue and there was in no way unanimity against Hitler, let alone having a comic book for kids punching out the leader of a foreign nation for whom there was considerable support

It looks like this discussion, risen to the fore, may have inspired Mark Waid and Bryan Augustyn for this week’s Archie Comics: 1941, a period comic book set during the period of Archie’s original publication, but involved in something far more political for the time, participation in World War II before the Pearl Harbour attack…
