Captain Marvel: Jude Law Talks Joining the MCU and Robert Downey Jr.

One of the big names joining the Marvel Universe in Captain Marvel is Jude Law. We don't know who is playing yet, all articles aren't releasing his name, but most people are assuming he's playing Mar-Vell. Law might be just joining the Marvel Universe but, as he told Entertainment Weekly he's been watching it from the sidelines since day one. Law is close friends with Robert Downey Jr. and the two of them worked together in the 2009 version of Sherlock Holmes a mere year after the Marvel Universe kicked off.

"He had just done the first Iron Man when we first worked together," Law explains. "So I've sort of followed his journey and relationship with Marvel throughout, really."

Other Marvel actors have said that they have gone to Downey Jr. for advice since he's been doing this the longest. For Law he said that he didn't really get advice from his friend but he did talk about what it was like to be part of this universe.

"I don't know that he ever gave me any advice, but he obviously had a great time making these," Law says. "He talked a little bit about how [making a Marvel movie is like] fitting this one piece into a bigger picture that someone else has got their eyes on, and giving yourself over to that. It's not about trying to understand everything. Just do your piece."

Law is a pretty big name and considering how close he is to Downey Jr. it's kind of surprising it took this long for him to join up. For Law it was Marvel hiring interesting creatives behind their movies that really helped him decide that he wanted to join this universe.

"It just seemed like an interesting party to join in with at an interesting time in their ascendancy," he says. "That to me is an interesting playground to work in because suddenly you've got filmmakers who are looking at humor and script work and character, within an infrastructure that is obviously capable of creating enormous universes and worlds and special effects — while also not bogging down the creativity of the director."

That notion of hiring creative people and letting them do their own thing got a bit of a hairline fracture with several bad interactions like Edgar Wright, Patty Jenkins and James Gunn. There are still a lot of hard working people putting their own creative spins on Marvel movies and it's good that it is one of the things that draws in new actors to the franchise.

Summary: Carol Danvers becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.

Captain Marvel, directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, will also star Brie Larson, Jude Law, Gemma Chan, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Samuel L. Jackson. The film is set for release on March 8th, 2019.
