David Harbour Says Hellboy is a "Classically Complicated Hero"

Despite the fact that it's coming out early next year, we know almost nothing about the new Hellboy movie. We've seen a few images and sneak peeks and even had a few people talk about the movie, but not a ton of information. Vanity Fair interviewed David Harbour, and while most of the interview was about season 3 of Stranger Things, Harbour did talk about Hellboy and what we can expect from the character.

It's a classically complicated hero. He's a creature that was meant to bring about the end of the world, and he just sort of wants to be a good guy. He's got that complexity to him. He's also a monster who lives among human beings, so he's in a sense fighting for human beings against his fellow monsters, and yet the humans hate him because they fear him and they think he's weird looking and everything.

Hellboy First Look

Harbour agreed that the character is "different" and went on to describe how different this sort of character is both very different but also very similar to Jim Hopper, the role on Stranger Things that made him a household name.

Yeah, he's terrifying! There's that question of, why am I fighting this battle? Just because of some sense of justice, or some sense of good? It's a really interesting question that sort of is at the core of him, that he struggles with . . .I know that [writer] [Mike] Mignola and [director] Neil [Marshall] and [producer] Lloyd [Levin] all watched Stranger Things and saw that in what I did there, which is similar. He has a heart that's really good and with a lot of this crusted-over stuff. What I'm dealing with in Hellboy is a lot different, bigger in a certain way. It's very Shakespearean. It's demons and witches and stuff like that. But it has a similar core to a dude who's trapped in horrible circumstances who's just trying to be a good guy.

We we creep closer to the fall season we should see footage from Hellboy sooner rather than later. Until then we only have the words of the people involved and few images to go by. This reboot is going to be contentious, so it's going to be interesting to see how its received once that footage comes out and when the movies drops this January.

Summary: Hellboy comes to England, where he must defeat Merlin's consort and Nimue the Blood Queen. But their battle will bring about the end of the world, a fate he desperately tries to turn away.

Hellboy, directed by Neil Marshall, will star David Harbour, Milla Jovovich, Sasha Lane, Penelope Mitchell, and Ian McShane. It will be released on January 11th, 2019.
