The Girl in the Spider's Web Director Addresses the Recasting of Lisbeth Salander

When the first trailers for The Girl in the Spider's Web first hit people were a little confused. They knew about this character from the bestselling book series but there was another movie based on the first book that came out in 2011. David Fincher directed it and Rooney Mara was Lisbeth Salander. Now Claire Foy has taken over the role and director Fede Alvarez told Entertainment Weekly why they decided to go that route.

"There was a lot of debate — but not with me — mostly debate among the studio, if they [were] taking that route or not," said Alvarez about the possibility that Mara might reprise the role. "Eventually, I think it was me coming in, saying, I preferred to have my own cast. As a director, I just didn't like the idea of taking someone else's cast. As much as I admired Fincher as a filmmaker I think Rooney Mara is Fincher's Lisbeth, right? And I wanted to find my own."

The footage we've seen so far looks pretty impressive and Foy is an extremely talented actress. Whether or not people will be confused by the casting remains to be seen but unfortunately The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo didn't make much of an impact in 2011. It only grossed about $232 million worldwide despite the critical acclaim. Maybe this next entry in the series, technically the third book, will make a bigger impact.

Summary: Lisbeth Salander, the cult figure and title character of the acclaimed Millennium book series created by Stieg Larsson, will return to the screen in The Girl in the Spider's Web, a first-time adaptation of the recent global bestseller.

The Girl in the Spider's Web, directed by Fede Alvarez, stars Claire Foy, Sverrir Gudnason, Lakeith Stanfield, Sylvia Hoeks, Stephen Merchant, and Claes Bang. It will be released on November 9th.
