The customs and cultures of crime are set to collide on the streets of London, with Boardwalk Empire's Kelly Macdonald (Trainspotting) set to take on the criminal underworld as a lead in BBC One/Netflix's upcoming thriller Giri/Haji.

Hailing from writer Joe Barton (Humans) and Jane Featherstone's Sister Pictures and originally announced in May 2017, the eight-part series is set to commence production later this month in a number of UK locations as well as Tokyo. Julian Farino (The Child in Time) has been tapped to direct, with Susie Liggat serving as producer on the limited series project.

Described as a dark, character-driven crime story which cuts between London and Tokyo, exploring the butterfly effect between the two cities, Giri/Haji follows Tokyo detective Kenzo as he travels through London in search of his wayward younger brother Yuto. Once thought dead, Yuto is now believed to be posing as a Yakuza gangster in London and wanted for the murder of a Japanese businessman there. The series presents the story from a number of perspectives, all the while asking the question: How do we live with our actions when the prisms they're viewed through can seem to change so drastically depending on where we are or who we talk to?

Macdonald's Sarah is a London-based forensics lecturer and policewoman who forms an unlikely friendship and partnership with the Japanese detective as his search for his brother drives him deeper into the world of London's Yakuza. Having just wrapped BBC One legal drama The Victim, Macdonald (Black Mirror, State of Play) next stars in Marc Turtletaub's Puzzle later this month. Still to come late this year, Macdonald will co-star alongside Will Ferrell and John C Reilly as Mrs Hudson in Holmes and Watson; and returns to voice Merida in Disney's Ralph Breaks The Internet.
