RUMOR: The Team of Awesome Ladies Set to Appear in Birds of Prey

Some new rumors about Birds of Prey have surfaced. As always, with rumors we must remind everyone that they are just that, rumors, and they shouldn't be taken as fact. Until we hear the facts from Warner Bros. itself, it's always best to assume that these rumors are only partial truths at best.

That being said, the latest rumor comes from The Wrap. They are reporting that the Birds of Prey team will feature Black Canary, the Huntress, and Cassandra Cain alongside Harley Quinn as played by Margot Robbie. Some of those names should be familiar to fans who are fans of the Arrow TV show, since two of them have appeared on television.

RUMOR: The Team of Awesome Ladies Set to Appear in Birds of Prey

Black Canary, aka Dinah Laurel Lance, is a crime fighter who specializes in hand-to-hand combat and has the "canary cry". The power lets Black Canary create ultrasonic vibrations which are damaging to both physical objects and organics. The character was created in 1947, but the version that The Wrap is reporting on is the version that existed after Crisis on Infinite Earths. Laurel is the daughter of the original Black Canary, Dinah Drake, and inherits the title from her mother. Her most potent romantic interest is Oliver Queen, aka the Green Arrow.

The Huntress, aka Helena Rosa Bertinelli, is another crime fighter working out of Gotham City. She is a vigilante who is a skilled gymnast and also skilled in hand-to-hand combat. She was first created in 1989 and is one of several characters to hold the title of Huntress.

Cassandra Cain has had multiple aliases in the DC universe including Batgirl, Black Bat, and Orphan. She's another woman who is highly skilled in hand-to-hand fighting and is the daughter of assassins David Cain and Lady Shiva. She first appeared in the comics in 1999 and has been a member of the Birds of Prey in the past. It's unclear whether or not Cassandra will be sporting the Batgirl getup, but considering that Batgirl is set to have her own movie, it's more likely she'll either be Black Bat or Orphan.

Renee Montoya is a character that was first introduced in Batman: The Animated Series and made the jump to the comics not long after. She's a highly skilled detective who took up the title of the Question. She is one of the openly LGBTQ+ characters of the DC universe and she has had an on again off again relationship with Batwoman. She has not, in the past, been a member of the Birds of Prey.

Finally, the rumor also suggests that we're going to get a "Batman comics villain who has never before appeared on the big screen". Since this movie is rumored to have a very low budget that gets rid of a lot of the bigger Batman villains, but characters such as Scarface, Hugo Strange, Black Mask, Hush, Mad Hatter, Ventriloquist, Calendar Man, or Clockface could all be done with practical effects to keep the budget down.

While these are all interesting female characters, there is one problem: there isn't a lot of variety in their fighting styles. They are all hand-to-hand fighters, and as The Defenders showed, a group of people punching things isn't that interesting to watch. People might make fun of Black Widow or Hawkeye being on the Avengers, but they add variety to the fight scenes and make them interesting to watch. At the moment these fight scenes would be a bunch of badass ladies, but they would all look similar as far as fighting goes aside from some smaller variations.

Cathy Yan is set to direct this movie with Christina Hodson writing the script. The production is rumored to begin in January, so we can expect casting announcements sooner rather than later.
