X-ual Healing: Mister Sinister Takes on Cambridge Analytica in Hunt for Wolverine Adamantium Agenda #3

Sworn to sell comics for Marvel executives who feared and hated the fact that Fox owned their movie rights, The Uncanny X-Men suffered great indignities, but with a corporate merger on the way, the X-Men can finally get back to doing what they do best: being objectively the best franchise in comics.

Each week, armed with the joy, heartbreak, and frustration of 30+ years of reading X-Men comics, we crankily read every new X-book that comes out, recap the events, provide some back-links to Marvel Unlimited, and wonder when Marvel will let Chris Claremont write something again. Seriously, how do you have the greatest writer in the history of comics on the payroll and just not use him for anything?

It's the way X-Men comics were meant to be read! It's the column that can only be known as…

HAS SINISTER UNLOCKED THE SECRETS OF LOGAN'S GENES?

32 PGS./Parental Advisory …$3.99

The quest to squeeze an additional $70 or so out of readers before delivering the actual return of Wolverine in a completely different mini-series continues in Hunt for Wolverine: The Adamantium Agenda #3. This is the New Avengers rehash book, in case you weren't getting enough Bendis in your Superman comics, and our heroes — Iron Man, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Spider-Man, and All-New Wolverine/X-23 — went to a submarine auction of superhero DNA and ran into Mister Sinister.

But before we get to that, the issue picks up with more of the flashback to the New Avengers days, where Wolverine sacrificed himself to get blown up in a Warehouse (which is no big deal, the guy is basically unkillable, and even if you do manage to kill him, it just results in a crapload of mini-series bringing him back a few years later). Anyway, Wolverine is recovering from getting blown up and talking to Iron Man. He tells Iron Man that he'll keep his "secret." Wolverine points out that Tony was a total dick during Civil War and really messed up the Marvel Universe. Wolverine is willing to help Tony put everything back together for the sake of the world (uh… then why did he later advise Captain America to invade Utopia and start Avengers vs. X-Men?). With that in mind, he won't tell anyone what Tony's been up to… including the readers, who will need to wait until next issue to finally find out what happens in this flashback. Hey, Man of Steel dragged out a flashback for six issues. At least this one is only four.

On the sub, the New Avengers battle Mister Sinister until X-23 cuts off both his hands. Iron Man lifts the sinking sub out of the water and a South Korean helicarrier comes to arrest all the criminals. The New Avengers interrogate the guy who was selling superhero DNA. He reveals that Sinister has collected a database of DNA, which are on the Kerguelen Islands, also known as the Desolation Islands. The place is so isolated, it's going to require a really good gimmick to invade, so Iron Man gives the entire team their own Iron Man suits.

They invade the base, they beat up some guards, Iron Man says what we're all thinking…

Finally, they find Sinister's DNA database, and Jessica realizes it must contain DNA for every person on the planet. And you thought Facebook was bad! This will be concluded next issue.

The Bottom Line

Yes, all four of the Hunt for Wolverine mini-series are a blatant cash-grab kicked off with the implication that the original Wolverine would return in them, only for Marvel to later announce an actual Return of Wolverine mini-series kicking off after these end. Actually, we don't have a counterpoint to that. But if you enjoyed the peak Bendis era, then you'll enjoy this comic.
