Sworn to sell comics for Marvel executives who feared and hated the fact that Fox owned their movie rights, The Uncanny X-Men suffered great indignities, but with a corporate merger on the way, the X-Men can finally get back to doing what they do best: being objectively the best franchise in comics.
Each week, armed with the joy, heartbreak, and frustration of 30+ years of reading X-Men comics, we read every new X-book that comes out, recap the events, provide the historical context so you can read it on Marvel Unlimited, and wonder when Marvel will let Chris Claremont write something again.
It’s the way X-Men comics were meant to be read! It’s the column that can only be known as…

The issue opens in North Carolina with Strong-Guy, Prodigy, Boom Boom, and Wolfsbane running to the crash site, where the plane that Magik and Rictor was on just crashed. Firefighters are there putting out the fire. It doesn’t look like there were any survivors. Wolfsbane catches a scent. It’s Magik. She says Rictor is dead. Bummer.
Later, at the Xavier Institute, Kitty Pryde and Magik get ready for Rictor’s funeral. They reminisce about the good old days, and Kitty tells Magik she’s actually a good leader even though she lost a team member since she stuck around afterward. Besides, mutants die and come back all the time. It’s nothing to worry about. Shatterstar speaks at the funeral, and he invites Magik to say a few words. She breaks down instead.
Later, her brother Colossus catches tries to console her, but she’s not having it. Making matters worse, Wolfsbane attacks Strong Guy over that whole murdering her son while he didn’t have a soul thing. Magik quickly snaps back into team leader role and breaks up the fight, lecturing Wolfsbane, but Wolfsbane now lashes out at Magik, blaming her for everything.
Dani Moonstar takes Magik for a walk to console her. She was co-leader when Cypher died, so she knows a little something about this. As they converse, Magik begins to get suspicious. She takes out her soul sword. Kitty jumps in between them. Magik stabs the sword through Kitty and Dani… shattering the illusion!?
Turns out, Magik is still on the plane talking to Tran, the brother of Karma who the team has been trying to stop. More importantly, the plane hasn’t crashed yet. Rictor is still alive! Magik has a second chance. She uses it, teleporting the entire plane. Nine days later, Karma and Prodigy are in a helicopter, still searching for the plane wreckage. They get word that the plane has just landed in a nearby body of water. They head there to find Magik and Rictor on one wing, the passengers on the other. The icing on the cake: X-pository dialogue between Karma and Prodigy goes out of its way to explain that Magik’s powers sometimes cause her to travel through both space and time.
Additional X-pository dialogue reveals that Karma is keeping secrets…
In our epilogue, we see more of Warlock, who was beaten up by a group of kids in the woods for being a mutant last issue. Warlock grabs one of them, who the others were teasing about being a mutant earlier. Turns out they’re right. The boy unleashes his mutant power which blows a hole in Warlock. The issue ends there.
The Bottom Line
Can we please have a New Mutants ongoing from this exact creative team? Thanks.
It was nice to see Dani during the funeral, or psychic illusion Dani if we’re being technical, played, given her role as co-leader of the New Mutants when Cypher died back in New Mutants #60, in a story which started with the arrival of Bird Brain back in New Mutants #56. You can read all of that on Marvel Unlimited (though there are issues missing from the complete New Mutants run, annoyingly). The real question is: when will Matthew Rosenberg write a Bird Brain ongoing?
