6 New Pictures from Mortal Engines

While we’re just getting into the summer blockbuster season, that doesn’t mean there aren’t some big movies coming later this year. One of the big ones is the Peter Jackson-produced adaptation of Mortal Engines. We haven’t seen that much from the movie just yet, but USA Today got six new images and got to sit down with Jackson and director Christian Rivers about the production. Jackson talked about what drew him to this material in the first place.

“It was a damn good read of a story that didn’t remind me of anything else I’d ever read before,” says Jackson. … “Being on a city that moves about and has shops, theaters, power, lights and fun stuff? It’s not a 1984 George Orwell thing — it’s got an attractiveness to it in a whole different way.”

Rivers, who was a visual effects supervisor on Lord of the Rings and a unit director on The Hobbit, talked about how Jackson is always pushing boundaries to get the biggest scope possible for his movies.

“Peter always really likes to push the boundaries and, with all due respect, go quite excessive in certain areas, which is why so many people love his films,” Rivers says. “At the end of the day, you want to draw on all the strengths but also create your own creative vision.”

Summary: Many years after the “Sixty Minute War,” cities survive a now desolate Earth by moving around on giant wheels attacking and devouring smaller towns to replenish their resources.

Mortal Engines, directed by Christian Rivers, stars Hera Hilmar, Hugo Weaving, Frankie Adams, Caren Pistorius, Stephen Lang, and Robert Sheehan. It will be released on December 18th.
