Hellblazer Canceled; Writer Tim Seeley Says "I Was Hired to Bring It to an End"

It looks like July will be the final issue of Hellblazer at DC Comics, at least for now. Following July's The Hellblazer #24, there are no new issues of the book solicited in August. And now, writer Tim Seeley has confirmed the sad news, writing on Twitter that he was brought onto the book in the first place only to bring it to an end, even if it took him a year to do it.

DC's August solicits came out last week, as did Seeley's tweet, but nobody seemed to notice until today, when Newsarama first covered the news. Perhaps that's part of the reason DC hired Seeley to slowly snuff out the book with a pillow over its face? The book was ranked #159 on Diamond's April charts, with Comichron estimating sales of just over 12,600.

And though there are no immediate plans to relaunch the series, Seeley did point out that readers will get a new take on John Constantine soon enough…

That book is Batman: Damned, by Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo:

BATMAN: DAMNED from Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo, the creative team behind JOKER
On a deserted Gotham City bridge, a body is found. Whispers spread the news: Joker is dead. But is this a dream come true or a nightmare being born? Now Batman and DC's outlaw magician John Constantine must hunt the truth through a Gotham City hellscape. The city's supernatural recesses are laced with hints about a killer's identity, but the Dark Knight's descent into horror will test his sanity and the limits of rationality, as he must face a horror that doesn't wear a mask.

Here's the solicit for The Hellblazer #24.

THE HELLBLAZER #24
written by TIM SEELEY
art by DAVIDE FABBRI

What would you sacrifice to save someone from damnation? The final chapter of "The Good Old Days" puts what may be the final nail in John Constantine's coffin: preparing to say goodbye to this mortal coil, John's oddly introspective, brooding over an ex-lover who's possessed by demons. Since she can't be exorcised, she's bound for Hell-unless John makes the ultimate sacrifice and takes her place. Pack light, John-we hear it's warm where you're going.
