Archie and Scholastic Sitting in a Tree M-A-K-I-N-G Riverdale Young Adult Books

Scholastic has nabbed the rights to produce books based on the hit TV series Riverdale. Entertainment Weekly first reported the news, which will see a companion book called Riverdale Student Handbook released in August and a prequel novel aimed at young adult readers, aptly titled Riverdale: The Day Before – The Prequel Novel, released for the holiday season. Written by Micol Ostow, the book will feature multiple characters from the show telling their own stories.

Riverdale is a reimagining of the classic Archie Comics characters, and by “reimagining,” we mean someone said “what if we made Twin Peaks, but with the characters from Archie,” and it became a massive hit. Archie’s comic universe saw a similar grim and gritty reboot in 2015.

“I grew up reading Archie Comics and always wanted to be Veronica,” said Scholastic VP of Global Licensing Debra Dorfman, which would make a pretty good name for an Archie Comics character, now that we think about it. “When I heard that Riverdale was going to be a new teen drama I immediately knew that Scholastic and Archie would make great partners. Both companies have been able to withstand the test of time, creating life-long readers and fans.”

“Partnering with Scholastic has always been a dream for Archie,” said Archie CEO Jon Goldwater, who expects us to believe that he literally goes to sleep at night and dreams about inking a book deal. “Like us, they’re leaders and innovators in all they do, and we feel there’s a strong synergy between our brands. When this opportunity first arose, we knew Scholastic would be the perfect home for expanding the stories and world of Riverdale through prose novels and other exciting formats. It’s a major partnership and the beginning of a great relationship between two iconic companies.”

Well, they boyhood dream has come true, Jon! Congratulations to the happy corporate couple!
