Elizabeth Olsen Takes Issue with Scarlet Witch’s Cleavage Corset

When it comes to being a woman in a superhero story, the costumes aren’t often practical or comfortable. These were outfits largely designed by men to work in drawings and not real life. There is a huge difference, and that’s why most costumes go through changes when it comes to adapting to the big screen. Most of the female outfits in the Marvel Cinematic Universe don’t show off a ton of skin, but there is one lady hero who would like a costume change. Elizabeth Olsen recently spoke to Elle and says that she wishes the neckline of her outfit was a little higher.

“It would just not be a cleavage corset. I like corsets, but I’d like it to be higher. Everyone has these things that cover them—Tessa Thompson does, Scarlett does. I would like to cover up a bit. It’s funny because sometimes I look around and I’m just like—wow, I’m the only one who has cleavage, and that’s a constant joke because they haven’t really evolved my superhero costume that much. But then you look at where it started in the comic books and it was a leotard and a headband so…oh, it’s horrible, it’s so horrible. So at least they know that’s not cool.”

Olsen went on to say that she understands why women are put in these outfits that aren’t necessarily practical and even more so when it comes to adapting iconic characters.

“But then they made Wonder Woman, you know? And that’s what she’s in. I think of the costumes and what we have to wear—it’s more about iconic images, because that’s what these movies are…. I think that’s the goal with the costumes, and it’s not representing the average woman.”

There really isn’t any reason they couldn’t ditch the corset version of Scarlet Witch’s costume. She’s wearing something unique to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and not a direct adaption of a comics outfit. A corset seems like it could be hard to run and move in even if Scarlet Witch’s powers are largely cerebral.
