Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom – Half Action Movie, Half Horror Movie

We got a new trailer for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom today, and it's giving us a much better idea of what kind of movie we're in store for. However, for those looking to go in spoiler free, I'd recommend not reading this coverage or watching the upcoming trailer.

Before now the trailers and marketing have mostly focused on the part of the movie that takes place on the island, but in this new story from Entertainment Weekly we have a better idea of what the second half is going to be about. Writer Colin Trevorrow talks about the new moral debate that comes with wanting to save creatures that we created.

"You have this extinction-level event on that island, and the world is looking at these creatures that we created and asking, 'Well, what is our right? Do we let them die because we created them and they shouldn't be here in the first place, or do we have a responsibility to save them?'"

For Bryce Dallas Howard's character Claire, she has become an activist looking to save the dinosaurs the same way we go about saving other endangered species.

"Basically, her sense of purpose now is to ensure that these animals have the same protections as any other endangered species," explains Howard.

The first movie ended with a romance between Claire and Owen, played by Chris Pratt, but that isn't a thing anymore going into the second movie. Owen isn't so excited to return to the island after barely escaping the first time, but he feels like he has to when he finds out Blue, his only surviving raptor, is still alive.

"She appeals to my better self when she brings up Blue because she's still alive," says Pratt. "Claire's going to try to get the dinosaur out of harm's way, and I can join her if I want. And, of course, I do. Spoiler alert: We go back. I'm in the movie!"

The heroes make it off the island, obviously, with some dinosaurs in tow, but it turns out this isn't quite the rescue mission they were led to believe. These dinosaurs are being sold on the black market, and there is something even more sinister going on.

"Whether that's a sanctuary or not is all part of where the story takes you," says Trevorrow. "The worst instincts of mankind are revealed. The first film was very clearly about corporate greed. This is just about human greed."

Steven Spielberg, who executive produced the movie, says that there is a great tonal shift that happens in the third act of this movie.

"It has a wonderfully, deliciously scary third act," says Spielberg. "J.A. knows how to create terror, but he also knows how to orchestrate it so you're not brutalized by it, and he has the gift of restraint. But when he needs to open up the throttle, he really knows how."

We all had nightmares about raptors after the first movie, and this one is looking to play into those nightmares as we have one of the new dinosaurs, the Indoraptor, in a little girl's room.

"What becomes scary about it is it becomes more contained, like we have an Indoraptor in a little girl's bedroom. That's a kind of hell that we haven't seen in a Jurassic movie. It's surreal to see dinosaurs in that kind of an environment. And let me just tell you, there's so much carnage!"

Little me literally had a version of this nightmare in 1993.

Summary: When the island's dormant volcano begins roaring to life, Owen and Claire mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from this extinction-level event.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, directed by J.A. Bayona, stars Jeff Goldblum, Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Toby Jones, James Cromwell, Ted Levine, Geraldine Chaplin, Rafe Spall, B.D. Wong, and Justice Smith. It will be released on June 22nd.
