Mark McKenna Announces a Combat Jacks Collected Edition

When Mark McKenna first began the journey of creating Combat Jacks, he never thought much about where it would take him beyond the first original issue. That book, created with the idea that there was a lack of campy space horror on the market, was meant to be a one-and-done.

Four issues later, a completed mini-series has been distributed across the country via Diamond, and Combat Jacks has grown into a beast no one could have predicted.

“It wasn’t until that first story was done that the idea of expanding it into a mini-series came about,” said McKenna, a longtime inker in the comics industry who has worked on hundreds of books for publishers like DC, Marvel, Image, and more “Once we started on the director’s cut of the first issue, we started discussing the possibility of a mini-series.”

And that mini-series — pencilled by Jason Baroody, inked by McKenna, and co-written by McKenna and Sam Eggleston — completed its run late last year with the distribution of the fourth book.

Now the creative team has set their eyes on an even larger accomplishment — the Combat Jacks collected edition.

The trade, which not only collects the four comics but also adds in a never-before-seen story, will be funded through a Kickstarter campaign. That campaign, which marks McKenna’s eighth, will allow the creative team to produce a hardcover edition of Combat Jacks, complete with a foil-stamped JACK cover.

“We are really excited about the possibility,” McKenna said of the hardcover trade. “There has been a lot of hard work put into this series, and we’re all very proud of what we’ve created. To be able to collect it and produce such a quality trade is the crown jewel for the entire creative team.”

The Kickstarter features reward tiers for every budget, and ranges from a specially-designed Combat Jacks patch to original art to custom commissions. The Kickstarter campaign is LIVE now and can be found at https://tinyurl.com/ybkqlwrq
