Rampage Director Talks the Violence and Gore

When it comes to giant monsters you have to wonder what kind of violence and gore you're going to see. A movie like Kong: Skull Island had a few pieces of really surprising violence that seemed to come out of no where. Rampage is yet another giant monster movie so what kind of violence and gore are we going to be looking for in this PG-13 movie? Bloody Disgusting asked director Brad Peyton about what we can expect from these giant monsters.

"I'm not really into gore," Peyton said. "That's not really my thing. I like squirminess, like in an Indiana Jones movie. I don't necessarily love gore. What I like doing is kind of undercutting it. When a certain person dies and blood splatters over the glass, it's kind of for comedic purposes. It just wasn't a factor for me. I think that I make adventure films. The gore thing never really crossed my mind."

When it came to a comparison as far as the gore and violence thing Peyton talked about the face melting from Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark since it was the outrage against Temple of Doom that helped create the PG-13 rating. Peyton says the violence is less there to gross you out and more to startle you.

"[Rampage goes] much more towards Nazi face melt off than pure Hostel gore," Peyton said. "I definitely try to scare the hell out of you every now and then. If you look closely, a couple guys get ripped in half in Wyoming. I try to do it in a way that you have that moment where you're like, 'Oh, damn' but it's not so gruesome you're scaring the hell out of your kids or your girlfriend's turning away. It's meant to startle you but not gross you out."

When asked if he had any issues with the ratings board Peyton confirmed that they didn't get any notes back.

"We went in front of the ratings board once and I didn't get any notes," Peyton said. "I'm assuming they weren't offended by it."

So if you were hoping to see someone getting tore apart by a giant wolf you're probably going to be out of luck. Rampage the video game was much more focused on city destruction compared to killing people and, thus far, the trailers are promising plenty of the former.

Summary: Primatologist Davis Okoye (Johnson), a man who keeps people at a distance, shares an unshakable bond with George, the extraordinarily intelligent, silverback gorilla who has been in his care since birth. But a rogue genetic experiment gone awry transforms this gentle ape into a raging monster. To make matters worse, it's soon discovered there are other similarly altered alpha predators. As these newly created monsters tear across North America, destroying everything in their path, Okoye teams with a discredited genetic engineer to secure an antidote, fighting his way through an ever-changing battlefield, not only to halt a global catastrophe but to save the fearsome creature that was once his friend.

Rampage, directed by Brad Peyton, stars Dwayne Johnson, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Naomie Harris, Malin Akerman, and Joe Manganiello. It will be released on April 13th.
