PUBG Introduces Weapon Skins on Test Servers

PUBG has just seen an update on the test servers that adds weapon skins to the title, coming in small loot boxes.

We've known weapon skins were coming to PUBG for a little while now. They were talked about in the 2018 roadmap put out by the PUBG Corp., which seems to be part of a bolstered effort to allow players to express themselves a little more. Coming off the release of emotes and work of parachute customisations coming too, it seems 2018 is going to bring the game pretty heavily in the more silly and skin based stuff. (If one was a cynic, you could even say this is an effort to adopt certain aspects of the surging Fortnite Battle Royale, but luckily we aren't cynics.)

We now have a look at just how weapon skins will work in the game too. The developer has put out a new patch on the test servers that shows off the system. The skins come as part of two new loot boxes: the Triumph and the Raider crates. The Raider crates are part of the random drops you get with BP, but the Triumph crates you will have to buy access keys to open. Inside you will have skins, which you can apply to the weapons. These seem like they will be added to the full game within days.

In a post on Steam, the developer also announced it is currently testing new servers that will match you with people closest to you rather than just by selecting a region. This would mean players from other countries trying to gain certain advantages can't come in and ruin your game.

Here are the full the patch notes:

Lobby

KR/JP joint server is now separated into KR server and JP server
Leaderboard for both KR Server and JP server are added
KR/JP players will be able to see and play on the server for their respective region
Those who can see neither KR sever, nor JP server, can only play in KR/JP server if they team up with a player who can see KR/JP server

Bug fixes

Fixed an issue where the refresh button on the friends list would take you to the team tab when players are in a team
Fixed an issue where when players leave the vehicle and the vehicle is positioned right next to the window of a building, players would go into the building through the window when getting out off the vehicle
Fixed an issue where during server instability, when exiting a slow moving vehicle, the players would be treated as if they were hit by their own vehicle

I'm interested to see what PUBG Corp. ends up doing with this and how far it will go. The game has always maintained a pretty serious tone, but seeing just how far the developer pushes it should be an interesting balancing act to watch.
