Overwatch's Reaper and Mei Next In-Line for Buffs

Overwatch's Reaper and Mei are the next characters getting looked at and improved according to lead designer Geoff Goodman.

Overwatch's Reaper and Mei Next In-Line for Buffs

Brigitte has just been added to Overwatch, and it's not clear yet just how she is going to shift the meta. As a character that was designed to provide some counter to the stubborn dive meta, it seems we should see some movement on that front. However, past that, we will have to see how she affects the game over the next few weeks. Blizzard aren't hanging around for that shift to happen though, and instead, they are already planning to buff to characters pretty soon.

According to Overwatch Lead Designer Geoff Goodman, the team is expecting a strong tank meta in the wake of Brigitte's release and possibly a return to triple tank meta. To pre-emptively counteract that, the team is looking to buff both Mei and Reaper. Responding to a forum question about changes in the face of a Brigitte meta, Goodman said:

We're always trying to get ahead of the meta and trying to predict what shifts are likely to take place. In this case, we're seeing some potential for a big tank meta on the horizon, especially with Moira just recently being released and how good she is at healing multiple tanks.

He added:

I'd certainly be worried about buffing heroes like Roadhog, Zarya, and even Ana until we can get a better gauge on how the game is shifting.

In fact, we're looking at buffing Reaper and Mei in an upcoming PTR patch (hopefully this week) since they could use a boost and they could help with this meta if it comes around.

This should be interesting to see come through. Reaper could certainly use a little help as he is powerful, but certainly lagging behind a couple other offensive heroes in pick rates (as a Reaper main too, I'll always take buffs!). Mei has just recently seen some buffs too, so it is interesting to see her get another so soon. I'm not expecting anything too big, especially as she could become incredibly strong even with small changes. Hopefully, these do land later this week so we can see what is up.
