Live from Bevos Hall at South By Southwest (SXSW), Ready Player One LIVE at SXSW presented by Twitch and IMDB, featuring interviews with the cast, creators, and more happening before the WORLD PREMIERE of RP1.
Aisha Tyler introduced Alex Corea, the host for the event from the stage in the Ready Player One experience. Corea has been chatting with various folks from the face-paced world of VR tech and gaming, as well as showing the audiences all of the RP1 stuff around the center.
Ernie Cline and Zak Penn both stopped by to talk about the creation of the original book and the crafting of the script, as well as the cast- Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Lena Waithe, Philip Zhao, and Ben Mendelsohn.
Mendelsohn spoke a bit about his character, IoI head Nolan Sorrento, and how he’s maybe not as ‘bad’ of a bad guy in the grand scheme of things:
Nolan wants a more peaceful world, basically and you know to do that you gotta take control of the oasis basically. You know I run a pretty cool hardware company, I gotta bunch of punks working for me you know we do our thing. To make an army we have to break a lot of eggs!
Both Tye and Olivia commented on what they hope audiences will take away from the film (which ended up having it’s world premiere later that day):
Sheridan: For me, I think it’s that thing we were just talking about, and it’s about accepting who you are as you are. You have to embrace it for what it is and I think that over the course of the film I think that all of these, the five of our characters learn. I think for me it was the major theme to take away. Although it is a big adventure film and it’s really fun, but for me, that was the heart of the film.
Cooke: Yeah, I think it’s important not to connect all the time, you’re allowed to disconnect and then be able to tap into the reality around you and look up and look up into someone’s eyes rather than kind of stare into the virtual eyes of an avatar.
One of the most exciting parts of the livestream is what we’re assuming to be the first taste of Alan Silvestri‘s score, which plays during the pauses.
