Changing the Past in Time Travel, Or Not – Spectacular Spider-Man #300, Action Comics #998, X-Men Blue #22, Terrifics #1, Thanos #16, Iron Man #597, Avengers #682 Spoilers

There now follow spoilers for Spectacular Spider-Man #300, Action Comics #998, X-Men Blue #22, Terrifics #1, Iron Man #597, Avengers #682, Thanos #16, Infinity War Prelude #2, Detective Comics #575… and probably the end of the Doctor Strange movie now I think of it.  Spoilers

Time travel has become a repeated plotline in Big Two comics of late. To be fair, it’s always been around, but of late it has been the main course.

Marvel has had the original X-Men brought to the present, Rachel and Cable from the future, Avengers constantly finding themselves in the future, and the past, Ages of Ultron, Days of Future Pasts, 2099s and everyone keeps using Doctor Doom’s Time Platform.

Yeah, like that in Thanos #16.

While DC Comics has Justice League children from the future, Five Years Later, Batman Beyond, dark Batmen from the future, Jor-El snatched from the past, Legionnaires trapped in the present and everyone keeps using Flash’s Time Treadmill.

And everyone seems to want to try and change their past willy-nilly. But is that starting to wear thin? A reprise of the end of the Doctor Strange movie in the Infinity War Prelude #2 sets the tone, after they turned back the clock a few minutes in order to win a battle.

Consequences. A reckoning. Well…

Action Comics #998 sees Superman use the Treadmill to travel to the moment of his biological parents’ death, commanded to do nothing by Booster Gold…

Which he obeys.

In Peter Parker, Spectacular Spider-Man #300 we learn that Doom’s Time Platform is not what it once was.

With the Time Variance Authority namechecked as having made some alterations. No time changes are possible anymore.

While in Invincible Iron Man #597, it’s not working at all. Ah, it’s Bendis’ final issues, continuity is the least of concerns, if it ever was. Maybe they’ll get it working for #598.

While in X-Men Blue #22, they have resigned to this being a quirk of time and that they will return to their original timeline as originally intended at some point…

Unless that’s all bollocks as well. The Terrifics #1 also wants to set the future in motion…

… with the revelation of an ancestor of a Legion Of Super-Heroes member centuries to come. A great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandmother to Phantom Girl.

Still, at least these two timelines are separate, with Marvel and DC Comics politics the way they are, we won’t risk any kind of crossover right now, right Booster Gold in Action Comics #998?

Oh boy. Hey, Avengers #682…

… did someone just walk over his interdimensional grave?

You know China would love a time travel where nothing can change the past. But it seems that Booster Gold won’t be giving it to them.

But as everyone from Baron Mordo to Skeetz says, there will be consequences… Brian Bendis comes along, fires all your writers and takes over the books…
