Cosplay Spotlight Double Feature: Sanura Cosplay and Cryptic Cyborg

Our previous article on cosplayer Erik Harris — AKA Casual Assassin Cosplay — was met with a ton of positive reactions! Springing forth from that, we turn our attention to two more fantastic cosplayers: Cryptic Cyborg and Sanura Cosplay.

BC: How long have you been cosplaying? What interested you in cosplay?

I've been cosplaying since 2012, so six years; but only recently have I seriously immersed myself in it. I was roped into it at my first AWA. My group wanted me to cosplay a character I had never heard of — forcing me to binge the anime in like two weeks (this anime is now in my top three). The cosplay turned out terrible, so I decided that I would do better next year and, before I knew it, I was cosplaying all the time.

BC: What's your favorite cosplay?

My favorite cosplay I have done is my Hades cosplay. I really had no idea how to use skin paint, so it was rewarding for it to look so good.

BC: What do you find challenging about the cosplay community? What would you like to see change?

I feel like the cosplay community is SUPER hung up on trends. If everyone is doing Overwatch, "YOU MUST DO OVERWATCH"; if everyone is doing lewds, "Why don't you do lewds?!" I really wish that there was less scrutiny within the community overall.

BC: What's your most memorable moment?

My most memorable moment was when I was creating my first prop for Momocon 2017 (Tokyo Ghoul Kagune). It fell apart two days before the con, so I had to start over from scratch. It turned out better than I could have imagined!

BC: How long have you been cosplaying? What interested you in cosplay?

I've been cosplaying since 2011. What got me interested in cosplaying was a chance to bring characters to life. Seeing my friends do it whenever they mentioned going to conventions inspired me. Plus, it gave me another reason to dress up outside of Halloween.

BC: What's your favorite cosplay?

My favorite cosplay is Drax the Destroyer. It was my first time working with body paint, so that was a challenge. Also, I got to show both sides of the character: funny and serious.

BC: What do you find challenging about the cosplay community? What would you like to see change?

To me, the challenging thing about the cosplay community is being acknowledged. There are plenty of black cosplayers being called the "black" version of a character or have had group photos where they're barely in the photo. In some cases we research/design these characters just like we're just got a movie role, so some acknowledgement would be nice. I would like to see that change for the better.

BC: What's your most memorable moment?

My most memorable moment in cosplay would have to be Awesomecon 2016 when I cosplayed Quan Chi from Mortal Kombat. The amount of children running up to me for pics, even though I was the bad guy, was amazing.

You can find Cryptic Cyborg on FB and Instagram.
