Sony, Filmmakers Apologize for Mocking Food Allergies in Peter Rabbit

Sony Pictures and the filmmakers behind Peter Rabbit, which opened in second place at the box office this weekend, have issued a joint public apology in the wake of backlash and a boycott over a scene in the film mocking food allergies. In the movie, antagonist Mr. McGregor is allergic to blackberries, so Peter Rabbit and his friends throw blackberries at him, causing him to have an allergic reaction and need to inject himself with epinephrine. The scene sparked outcry from parents of children with food allergies, prompting the apology, according to a report from CNN.

“Food allergies are a serious issue,” the statement agreed. “Our film should not have made light of Peter Rabbit’s arch nemesis, Mr. McGregor, being allergic to blackberries, even in a cartoonish, slapstick way. We sincerely regret not being more aware and sensitive to this issue, and we truly apologize.”

But the apology may be too little, too late, as the hashtag #boycottpeterrabbit is still going strong on Twitter, with the movie’s titular rabbit named a bully for his actions. Will Gluck directed the movie, which stars James Corden, Daisy Ridley, Margot Robbie, Elizabeth Debick, Domhnall Gleeson, Rose Byrne, and Sam Neill.
