Marvel Studios Celebrates 10 Years of Movies Without a Female Lead

Marvel Studios took to Twitter today to post a behind-the-scenes video and a "class photo" taken with 79 actors and filmmakers involved in Marvel's first 10 years of operation, during which time Marvel did not release a single movie starring a woman as the lead character or directed by a woman. Let's take a moment to celebrate with them.

"Marvel Studios kicks off its yearlong 10th-anniversary celebration with a behind-the-scenes look at the class photo featuring 79 actors and filmmakers from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe," the tweet read. Despite the many talented women featured in the photograph who would be completely capable of starring in a blockbuster superhero movie, Marvel instead chose to focus for those first 10 years on making movies, all directed by men, with male solo leads or primarily male ensemble casts.

"On October 7th, the Marvel Cinematic Universe assembled for their official class photo," the video explains, marking an occasion that serves as both an anniversary for the studio and a milestone, as Ant-Man and the Wasp will be the first Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to feature its female co-star in the movie title. Ant-Man and the Wasp will be the 20th movie released by Marvel Studios, but it won't be until the 21st movie, 2019's Captain Marvel, that Marvel will release its first solo female superhero flick starring Brie Larson, which is also co-directed by a woman, Anna Boden, with Ryan Fleck.

"It's almost like being drafted to a sports team that has a legacy of championship banners," says Chris Pratt, presumably referring to a sports team in an all-male league. "It's a dream come true."

"I literally am in dead center in the front row [of the photograph]," says Robert Downey Jr., "And I'm looking around going, any one of these people could be dead center." Assuming they're a man, of course. Because for the first 10 years, Marvel Studios only made movies directed by men and primarily starring men, even though a Black Widow movie starring Scarlett Johansson was so freaking obvious, Jennifer Lawrence decided to go and make one on her own without Marvel's help.

Congratulations on 10 years, Marvel Studios.
