San Francisco 49ers Sign Jimmy Garoppolo to a $137.5 Million Deal

The San Francisco 49ers believe they have found their quarterback of the future in Jimmy Garoppolo, a player they traded for in November of 2017 from the New England Patriots. The cost to lock up the 26-year-old signal caller for five years is $137.5 million dollars with $90 million guaranteed. This makes Garoppolo the highest-paid player in the NFL, and he has started a grand total of seven NFL games.

The numbers are big, but the surprise isn't as Garoppolo joined a 1-10 football team and led them to victory in their final five games of the season. That's a great way to catch the attention of the fans and the front office. And at his young age, he is expected to keep getting better.

The team had spent the offseason hoping that the Washington Redskins were going to cut loose Kirk Cousins, someone that the Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan was very familiar with. When that didn't happen, they went into the season with journeyman Brian Hoyer as the starter and it didn't go well. They made the trade on October 31st for a 2nd round draft pick, but Garoppolo didn't get his first start until December 3rd. Hoyer was cut and picked up by the Patriots as their backup.

Going into this offseason, Niners GM John Lynch made it clear that his top priority was getting Garoppolo under a long term contract and then building the team around him. The young quarterback set a franchise record for passing yards in his first five starts (1,542), that with little time in the new offense, and we're talking about a team that had Joe Montana, Steve Young and Jeff Garcia under center of the years. He good performance obviously raise his price tag.

For his career, Garoppolo has appeared in 23 games with seven starts. He's completed 67.3% of his passes for 2,250 yards, 12 touchdowns, and five interceptions.
