Rumor: 2018's Entry in the Call of Duty Franchise is Black Ops 4

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is reportedly in development at Treyarch and will be released later this year as 2018's entry in the long-time FPS franchise.

"Multiple sources" told Eurogamer that Black Ops 4 will be this year's entry in the Call of Duty series. The game will reportedly "dial back" the subseries' sci-fi elements, instead opting for "a more grounded feeling." The report states this is in response to Infinite Warfare's negative reception in 2016. And perhaps the nostalgia-fueled love that fans had for Call of Duty WWII this past fall. After all, "dialing back Black Ops" sounds a lot like the "return to its roots" tag that helped herald in WWII to be 2017's best selling game in the US.

Treyarch is, in fact, next up in Activision's three-studio Call of Duty rotation. Last year's Call of Duty was developed by Sledgehammer Games, while Infinity Ward helmed 2016's Infinite Warfare.

Eurogamer points to a tweet by self-proclaimed "industry insider" Marcus Sellars as the first to report the Black Ops 4 rumor. In the tweet, Sellars states Black Ops 4 will be released on Nintendo Switch, in addition to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, though that claim has not yet been verified. The series was last seen on a Nintendo platform in 2013 when Call of Duty: Ghosts was released on Wii U. That said, Bethesda did port their 2015 edition of DOOM to the hybrid console with some  success.

Last year's Call of Duty also leaked ahead of its official reveal. WWII was hinted at during Activision's end of year sales report and was then leaked thanks to some early marketing materials a month ahead of its official announcement.
