A Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia Gets An April Release Date

Creative Assembly has announced that the first of its Saga games, A Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia, will be arriving in April.

Total War Saga

A little while ago, Creative Assembly announced a new spin-off series to its ever-popular Total War franchise called Total War Saga. These “sagas”, would push the parameters by taking the focus away from entire eras, and instead, pinpoint of specific moments in history. Instead of Rome or Medieval, which looked at vast periods of time, or Attila and Napoleon, which looked at one person, these titles are set to focus on battles or conflicts that only lasted a few years. Essentially, these spin-offs are to hyperfocus the series.

Well, the first title is on the horizon. The developer has revealed that Thrones of Britannia will be launching April 19, 2018 on PC. It will take place in 878AD when the British Isles were in chaos after the Viking invasion. Here is an official synopsis from the game’s reveal back in November:

878 AD, and the Viking Invasion of Britain is over. The Norse warlords are firmly established, but the ambitious kings of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales have aspirations of their own – not least the great King Alfred of Wessex.

If you are confused about how one of these ‘Saga‘ titles will differ from a mainline series, here is a video describing how the narrative will work a little differently here.

I really like this concept, and I think the choice of time period is also fascinating. Over here in the UK, we’ve had power struggles from country to country for a long ol’ time (arguably they are still going on). Being able to focus on it, learn something about it and also just get some great Total War gameplay is compelling argument to keep tabs on this. I’m certainly keeping an eye on it.
