Writer's Commentary: Shawn Aldridge Talks Hack/Slash Vs Vampirella #4

Dynamite has sent us a new writer's commentary by Shawn Aldridge for Hack/Slash vs Vampirella #4. The book has covers by Kyle Strahm and Goran Sudžuka with interiors by Rapha Lobosco.

* * * * *

Cassie and Vampirella's Vegas vacation continues as they take the fight to the Blood Queen and her horde to the scenic Nevada desert, where the secrets buried there will come back to haunt them. But not in a charming "old lady who died 100 years ago sitting in a rocking chair" kinda way.

Let the commentary begin!

Pages 1-2:

A bleeding Vampirella gave me a chance to explore some thoughts, my thoughts, on healing factors and such. The idea that healing factors aren't these painless, easy fixes.

Page 3:

Cassie and Vlad with Vampirella on his shoulder get the hell out of Dodge. Cassie being so dismissive of the Blood Queen is, to me, classic Cassie.

Hack/Slash

Pages 4-5:

Little tribute to Fast and Furious while showing Cassie's unique way of handling groups of demons.

Pages 6-7:

A tender moment for Vlad and Vampirella.

Pages 8-9:

A moment to show that Vampirella, in her own way, cares about the well-being of Cassie. Also Cassie repays the concern. Despite their constant bickering and different approaches, I wanted to show that they do kinda like each other.

Pages 10-11:

Welp, that didn't take long. Re-enter the BLOOD QUEEN!  And a little set-up for the punchline that is pages 12-13.

Pages 12-13:

Zombie gangsters!!! An idea you have at 3 a.m. in the morning that you're really glad you had.

Pages 14-17:

A fight scene with the required funny banter. Vampirella, again, having to explain that she's "not that kind of vampire" which may be my favorite running joke in this series. Cassie and Vampirella's bickering finally has some consequence, as Vlad is taken hostage, raising the stakes for issue #5.

Pages 18-19:

Our trio has become a shaky duo. Can they get along long enough to save Vlad?

Pages 20-22:

Hmm. Seems the Blood Queen is a bit showy. The stage is all set for the big, big showdown. Vlad seems to like the group's chances.
