Pokémon GO is Ditching Support for Older iPhones that Can't Run iOS 11

Pokémon GO developer Niantic Labs is cancelling support for older iOS devices that are incapable of upgrading to iOS 11, such as the iPhone 5 and third generation iPad. So if your iOS device is incapable of getting the new software update or hasn't been able to update its software in years, it's time to say goodbye to Pokémon GO or upgrade to a newer model.

The Pokémon GO team announced the change on their blog and defended the choice, saying that the change is coming because of improvements to the game that will "push the application beyond the capabilities of the operating systems on such devices."

The change will take place on February 28th, after which trainers may no longer be able to access their accounts from that device, nor use items from their bags. Players interested in continuing to play the game will have to do so on another supported device, since there really isn't any such thing as playing Pokémon GO offline.

The saddest bit of this news is that it comes after the recent reveal that, yes, Apple has been making the batteries of older iPhones more and more useless as time goes by. So not only does your iPhone 5 have a terrible battery life because of Apple's own machinations, it can't even host Pokémon GO anymore. But at least you can buy yourself a new iPhone battery for cheap?

Way to kick us while we're down, Pokémon GO.
