Krypton Season 1: We Might See New Gods, Green Lantern Corps, and the Omega Men

Yesterday, Syfy released a new trailer for the series Krypton the gave a much better idea of what the story is. The plot is more than just a look at Superman's grandfather — it's a story of time travel that has Brainiac heading back to destroy Krypton before Kal-El could ever be born and Adam Strange (Shaun Sipos) going back to find Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe), Kal's grandfather, to help him stop it… but not stop the the late destruction of the planet, otherwise Superman would never have come to Earth. Executive producers Geoff Johns and David Goyer spoke at the Television Critics Associations' winter press tour about the new series.

The show is not connected to the Arrowverse or Gotham universes, but that doesn't mean it will be limited in guests from the comics, according to Goyer:

"It's this gateway into the DC science fiction universe. Because the Phantom Zone figures into this show, it means we can definitely go into other times and other planets eventually. Even the inclusion of Adam Strange, that should to tip you off that it's not just going to be set on Krypton."

That means we might get the Green Lantern Corps or the New Gods. Johns added:

"Yeah, if the fans have read it in Mystery in Space, it will probably end up in our show. We were talking about the Omega Men earlier. Any of these characters will eventually show up in Krypton."

Johns was also asked why go with Adam Strange over someone like Booster Gold:

"Adam Strange… one of the great things about him is that his core story is that on Earth, he just kind of blends in — he's an average man. But when he travels via this Zeta Beam to another planet like Rann, he becomes this hero. He finds the hero within him. And so that conceit and the Zeta Beam technology plays into why Adam Strange specifically is able to travel from Earth present day to the past in Krypton. And he's an unlikely hero. He's the unlikely choice to shoulder this burden of trying to stop someone from the present from destroying Superman's legacy."

Johns had previously said they show would also touch on the Thanagarians and Doomsday. He went into more detail during the panel:

"There have been a lot of stories throughout the comics that we're drawing from. The time travel element does give us some unpredictability and some creative license to do some stories you don't know or stories that play out differently than what people might assume. We get to do our own iteration of Doomsday; we can explore a Doomsday that's never been done, and in a lot of ways its even closer to the comics because of that."

Goyer told the reporters that they have a seven or eight-year plan for the series, and that fans shouldn't feel they know how it will end:

"Because time travel's involved, the ending of our show… history could be changed, and what happens in this show could be very different from the backstory that many people know."

Krypton premieres March 21st on Syfy.
