The Magicians Season 3: Eliot and Margo Speak in Pop Culture Code

If you are not watching The Magicians already, this scene my bring you around to checking out the Syfy series as it returns for season three. Eliot (Hale Appleman) needs to tell Margo (Summer Bishil) that she is likely being watched. But he has to do it without actually saying it flat out… because she's being watched. So the two close friends slip into a pop culture code that is absolutely brilliant.

Magicians

The conversation references everything from Game of Thrones, Lizzie Borden, Harry Potter, the X-Men films, Britney Spears — and it all starts with a reference to Grace Park on Battlestar Galactica. Margo gets a nice shot in with her critique of BSG, "I love it when they do terrorism allegory with mostly white people." To go with the code they're speaking, the show gives you subtitles so you can follow along if you're not up on books and movies. This is the kind of out-there fun stuff the series does all the time, and it's one of the reasons the show is near the top of my favorites list.

Plus calling out the parallel of the Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph) character to Harry Potter shows that the writers are aware of how the show is called a college-age Harry Potter.

The Magicians returns for season 3 on January 10th on Syfy.
